My Research

Real Life Sound's Legacy
I made Real Life Sound as a project for a program I'm in, and originally it was going to be very different. My original topic was music preferences, and I did a survey on people in my community's preferences (shoutout to everyone who participated and thank you!) Then I started getting articles, and I read some about stereotypes in music videos. As I read more and more, I realized that they were really interesting me-even more than my music preference articles! I decided to split my project into two parts-preferences and stereotypes in videos. Here are the sources I used in both.

 Stereotypes in Music Videos
Sexual Objectification in Music Videos: A Content Analysis Comparing Gender and Genre Jennifer Stevens Aubrey & Cynthia M. Frisby, 2011

An Investigation of Sex-Role Stereotyping in Music Videos S. Seidman, 1992

Performing Gender: A content Analysis of Gender Display in Music Videos Cara Wallis, 2010

Both Subjects
It's Not Only Rock & Roll: Popular Music in the Lives of Adolescents P.G. Christenson & D.F. Roberts, 1998
Music Preferences
Music Style Preferences of Different Age Listeners A. LeBlanc, W.L. Sims, C. Siivola, M. Obert, 1996.

My Survey
I got a total of 17 responses to my survey. They were all people from my community, and I had a few specific groups that I got most of my data from. Here are the questions I used:
Please write your age/date of birth and gender you go by.

Q2: Please state a few of your interests and a few activities that you enjoy in your free time.

Q3: Please describe the genres of music you enjoy listening to, and if you see patterns in the artists you like describe them as well.

Q4: Please write the titles and artists of some of your favorite songs and give a brief description of why you like them. If you listen to many different genres and artists of music, please give examples that are not all from the same genre.

Q5: What part of a song makes you like/dislike it? Is it the melody, the beat, the lyrics...

Q6: Do you listen to the music videos of songs you enjoy? If you dislike the music video of a song you really like, does it change your opinion of the song?

Q7: Please give a brief description of your childhood environment. Do you think it affected your musical taste? How and why?

Q8: Are you a musician? If so, what instruments/genres do you perform? Do you think this affects your musical taste? How and why?

Christina Agulaira by Pitbull Please go to these addresses or if you can't, search these songs on YouTube and choose their music videos. Please rate how much you liked, from 1 to 10, each of the following for each song. Please make it clear what each rating is for; Melody, beat, lyrics, message, genre, artist, and music video.

If I had done this survey now, I would have included less similar styles of music and asked about stereotypes, but I did make a couple of conclusions regarding music preferences that I think are important. One is that background environment has a strong impact on music preferences. Siblings' and parents' taste in music help shape preferences, in positive or negative ways. Another is that music videos do not affect people's opinions of songs. If they don't like the video, they will simply not watch it. They still like the song. I suspect that if they like the video, it would increase positive opinions about the videos, but I didn't get evidence regarding this.

Through all my research regarding music preferences, I made the conclusion that there are several factors that determine music preferences, but although the same factors affect most people, they can affect them in very different ways. For example, if you're a teenager, that is going to affect your preferences. But it will make some teenagers like pop music and others like heavy metal. So you can only figure out what will affect people, not how it will affect them.
But age, race, gender, social standing, home situation, and other factors are almost always part of making people's preferences.

The articles I used came from a specific source that you probably don't have access to, but surveys can be an awesome way to get more information about this topic. Do your own and comment your results! Find out how your community is being programmed and put a stop to it. Help the world listen to real life sound.
